Fencing to Facilitate the Safe Movement of Koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus)

Koala (Phascolarctos cinereus)

Koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus) are listed as an endangered species under both the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 (NSW) (BC Act) and Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act), and in NSW, vehicle strike is regarded as a key threat to Koalas.

East Coast Ecology is currently working on several projects that involve the construction of Koala fencing to prevent Koalas accessing sections of road where there is a risk of vehicle strike. The fence aims to guide Koalas towards safe crossing points under the road where raised pathways improve access and facilitate their safe movement. The projects also include construction of one-way Koala/ fauna escape structures located intermittently along the fence lines, to allow any Koalas/ fauna to move from the road-side to the habitat-side.
